2023 Continental MycoBlitz

2023 Continental MycoBlitz

  • All of North America (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The second online, continental-scale mushroom-collecting foray! It is a part of our effort to document all of the macrofungi that exist in North America.

You may have heard of a “BioBlitz” – an intense, and usually time limited survey of all of the organisms living in a given geographic area. A MycoBlitz is a similar survey, but with the focus solely on fungi. Participants work to catalog as many species as they can from the survey area, during the survey time period.

The 2023 Continental Mycoblitz is open to anyone who is willing to make scientifically valuable collections of mushrooms – including photography, field notes, and submitting a dried specimen. Any individual or organization can submit their most unique/interesting/exciting collections from the foray week to the project. Mycologists and foray partners will examine each collection and will perform DNA sequencing on thousands of the specimens that are submitted. The best collections will have geotagged color photographs of the mushroom from multiple angles, a completed field data slip, and properly dried mushrooms. You have the chance to make a significant contribution to our knowledge of fungi from North America by submitting specimens to this project.

Stay tuned for updates with Maritime specific instructions!

Participation is as easy as:
Post to iNat Project – Dry Specimens – Mail them in for DNA

We had such a great time at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts in 2019 that we have decided to return!

In order to keep everyone as safe and comfortable as possible, we will be using a large, covered, outdoor space rather than the indoor meeting rooms for the mushroom display and workshop aspects of the event. There is an indoor mask requirement at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, which must be followed when using the bathrooms and within the indoor lobby space.

The cost to attend will be $25/person, or $20 for students. Children 12 and under are free.

While we do have a generous capacity for this October 15 foray, spots will be limited. Registration will open online, on Monday September 12. Each attendee must individually complete a registration form, which will be available using this link: https://forms.gle/wV1qJEb58zSTLJgm8.

Our buses will leave from the parking lots near the lodges for our half-day and full-day forays on Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday mornings and afternoons.

Venerable NAMA member, renowned author and south-central North American mycologist and President of the NAMA-affiliated Arkansas Mycological Society Jay Justice will, along with NAMA Institutional Trustee Dr. Andrew Methven, serve as one of two Chief Mycologists for our event!

We are also delighted to have engaged MSA NAMA Scholarship recipients Mara DeMers and Rachel Swenie, as well as Cornelia Cho, lichenologist Natalie Howe, Andy Miller, Henry Beker and Jon Sommer! Rounding out the roster are local mycomarvel Mike Snyder, who is also committed to lead our cultivation workshops, while the astonishing watercolorist and longtime NAMA foray fave Denis Benjamin is on tap to teach and inspire with his artistic expertise.

The Great North American FungiQuest 2022

The Great North American FungiQuest 2022

The Great North American Fungi Quest 2022 begins today! This challenge is hosted by Think Fungi and lasts a full month, until October 15, 2022. FungiQuest is the largest Fungi BioBlitz in North America!

Participants take up to 4 photos of each individual fungal species and upload the photos to an observation app. The goal is to collect as much data on what fungi are where across the entire continent of North America (22 countries).

There is no registration required to take part in the Great North American FungiQuest, nor is there a cost. In order to get started, you need only to download one of the nature-based observation apps from this list: iNaturalist, Mushroom Observer, NatureSpots, QuestaGame, Observation.org, or CitySci. Observations will automatically be incorporated into the Great North American FungiQuest, there are no additional steps required!

While we appreciate the observations submitted in every app, QuestaGame was generous enough to offer prizes to those who rank the highest in their own app. For those interested in observation prizes, please be sure to download and upload to QuestaGame.

Partner organizations have also created an online mushroom hunt. A FungiQuest mushroom is hidden somewhere on each website for you to discover! With it is a 6-digit code beginning with FQ (ie. FQ1234). Find all mushrooms and submit the Online Mushroom Hunt Form for your chance to win.

Follow the Think Fungi social media channels and participate in our promotional challenges for your chance to win one of five prize packages! Each week, we will be drawing a lucky winner from those who participated, with a total of five packages awarded through the duration of FungiQuest (5 weeks, 5 packages).
